“Resentment is the โ€œnumber oneโ€ offender. It destroys more alcoholics than anything else.”

“Resentment is the โ€œnumber oneโ€ offender. It destroys more alcoholics than anything else.” โ€” Alcoholics Anonymous (1939) · Chapter 5 · How It Works
Where it comes from

From the Fourth Step instructions in Chapter 5, where the book explains why the inventory begins with resentment before anything else.

Today’s reflection

Resentment is the drink before the drink. It rents space in your head, pays nothing, and burns the place down. The inventory isnโ€™t about deciding who was wrong โ€” itโ€™s about getting the poison out on paper, where it loses its grip. If someone is living rent-free in your head today, write their name down. Then ask what itโ€™s costing you to keep the case open.

Frequently asked questions

Maryland Recovery: Common Questions

What types of treatment are available in Maryland?
Maryland offers comprehensive treatment options including inpatient/residential treatment (24/7 care for 30-90 days), outpatient treatment (attend during day, return home), intensive outpatient programs (IOP, 3-5 days per week), and partial hospitalization programs (PHP, structured daytime treatment).
How long does addiction treatment take?
Treatment duration varies by program: detox (3-10 days), inpatient (28-90 days), IOP (8-12 weeks), and outpatient (3-6 months). Many Maryland facilities offer flexible program lengths tailored to individual needs. Aftercare and support group participation is recommended ongoing.
What therapies are used in Maryland treatment centers?
Maryland treatment centers commonly use evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR for trauma, motivational interviewing, family therapy, group therapy, and holistic approaches like yoga and mindfulness meditation.
Can I work while in treatment?
It depends on the program type. Inpatient treatment requires full-time residential commitment. Outpatient and IOP programs in Maryland are designed to accommodate work schedules, with evening and weekend sessions available at many facilities.
How do I find the right recovery program in Maryland?
Consider the type of treatment needed (detox, inpatient, outpatient, sober living), insurance coverage, location preferences, and specialized programs. Browse directory listings in Maryland and call providers to confirm current availability, services, and payment options.
Do facilities in Maryland accept insurance?
Many treatment centers and detox facilities in Maryland accept major insurance plans including Medicaid, Medicare, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare. Sober living homes typically require private pay but some partner with treatment centers for covered clinical components.
